Out of the BoatEcclesiastes 11:4

After This Season, He Said, For The Sixth Time

This message is for a man who has postponed the same obedience to the far side of six different seasons, each one genuinely busy, and has just heard himself say after this one again out loud

He heard himself say it in the kitchen on a Sunday night, with the dishwasher running.

After this season.

And the reason he heard it, this time, out of all the times, is that his wife did not say anything back. She just kept wiping the counter, and something about the not saying anything landed on him harder than an argument would have.

Because he counted, standing there, and he could name six.

The building project was one. That was a real season and it really did take everything, eleven months of it, and nobody could say otherwise. The year his father was sick was another, and nobody on this earth would count that against him. There was the stretch when the team turned over and he was doing three jobs. There was the move.

Every single one of those was true. That is the part that makes this hard. He was not lying to himself with any of them. He was a man carrying real weight, saying a reasonable thing about a genuinely full year.

Six times.

And the thing he keeps moving is not large. He has never once described it as large. It is a specific, plain thing, and if he is honest, the first time he said after this season, doing it would have taken less time than the conversation in which he explained why he could not.

He stood there with the dishwasher going and did the arithmetic on it. Six seasons. Call it four years, give or take.

And the season he is in right now is genuinely busy. That is the thing. It is not an excuse. It is Tuesday.

There is always a season. He knows that now, in the kitchen, at forty-six, which is a thing he has heard people say a hundred times and has never once heard.

And you have a sentence like that too. Maybe yours is after the holidays, or when the kids are in school, or once this quarter is behind us. You have said it in good faith, and you meant it, and you have said it more than once.

After This Season, He Said, For The Sixth Time

The one who watches the sky never gets the seed in

There is a line in Ecclesiastes that has been quietly describing a great many good men for a long time.

He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap.Ecclesiastes 11:4

Read who that verse is about. It is not about a lazy man. A lazy man is not out looking at the sky. The man in that sentence is a farmer, up early, standing at the edge of his own field, genuinely assessing the weather, doing something that looks exactly like wisdom and is in fact the thing that costs him the crop.

He is not refusing to sow. He is waiting for a better morning to sow in.

You are not a man who will not obey, and you have never been that man, and it matters that somebody says so plainly to you at this point in the page. It is written that the Lord knows our frame and remembers that we are dust (Psalm 103:14), and it is the Holy Spirit, not a scolding, who has kept this thing in front of you across six seasons because He has no intention of losing it.

Now the harder half, and it is the half that sets a man free.

Waiting for the clear sky is a decision. It does not feel like one. It feels like the absence of a decision, like a sensible pause before the real choice, which is precisely why four years can go by without a single moment that anybody could point at and call a refusal.

There was no refusal. That is exactly the problem. There was never a day he said no. There were six days he said after.

You are standing at the edge of the field right now, and the sky is not going to be the thing that releases you, because the sky was never holding you. Scripture says today is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2), and it is the Holy Spirit who has a way of making a word like today land in a kitchen on a Sunday night with the dishwasher running, when a man has heard it preached for twenty years and never once heard it.

Here is what has to change, and it is smaller than he thinks.

The instruction was never to obey after the season. It was never to obey instead of the season. It is to do the small true piece of it inside the season, which is a thing his own calendar has never even been asked about.

He has been treating obedience as an event that requires a cleared week. It has never once required a cleared week. It requires four minutes and a decision, and he has both of those on Tuesday.

You have room for this inside the season you are actually in, and that room has existed in every one of the six, which is not a rebuke but a release. It is written that His grace is sufficient and His strength is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9), and the Spirit named there is not waiting for your capacity to improve before He acts through you, because that has never once been the arrangement.

One more thing, about the six.

Nothing here is asking you to grieve them. They were real. The building was real, and your father was real, and the year the team turned over was real. God was not absent from any of them, and none of them are being reclassified now as wasted.

You are not behind, and there is no ledger with four years of arrears on it, because the account you are in was settled by Christ and never reopened. It is written that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), and it is His Spirit rather than your own hindsight who gets the final word about what those four years were.

The breakthrough

So stand in the kitchen and let the dishwasher run and say the number out loud. Six.

Not to punish yourself with it. To stop it being invisible. A thing you can count is a thing you can act on, and a thing that has never been counted just keeps quietly happening for another four years.

Nobody here is going to tell you what the thing is. This page does not know your calendar, and it is not going to hand a busy man a task he did not choose.

But you know. You knew before the counter got wiped.

And you know the small piece of it that fits inside this week, because you have known that from the first season, and it has been the same size the whole time while the seasons kept changing around it.

You have a today, and a today is all this has ever required of you, and you have had eighty of them in every season you postponed. It is written, he who observes the wind will not sow (Ecclesiastes 11:4), and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a farmer's proverb from three thousand years ago and stands a man up with it beside his own sink.

The sky is not the gate. It never was.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the kitchen, or the truck, or wherever you finally heard yourself. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by finally having a clear week. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the season, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about yourself while it kept arriving, then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the weeks after, His timing is His.

  1. Season that keeps arriving with another one behind it, you are not my calendar and you do not hold my step. The Word says the man watching the sky never gets the seed in, so the seed goes in today while you are still going on.
  2. Verdict that four years of after means I am not a man who obeys, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. It is written there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit who kept this thing in front of me for six seasons did not keep it there to accuse me with it.
  3. Lord, You have had a today waiting for me in every season I moved this to, and I am taking the one I am standing in. The piece is small and it is getting done inside the busy week, and the field was always Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
