The Wind Was Still UpIsaiah 50:10

He Obeyed And Then Heaven Went Quiet

This message is for a man who had a lifetime of clear communication with God, obeyed a costly instruction in the spring, and has had nothing at all since, and cannot tell whether he is being disciplined or dropped

He is not a man who claims things. That has to be said first, because of what comes next.

He has had, for most of thirty years, an ordinary and unremarkable running conversation with God. Nothing spectacular. No voices in the room. But a steady sense of being spoken with, in the way a person knows the difference between a house with somebody in it and a house without.

In the spring he did the thing.

It was expensive. It was clear. He weighed it for a long time in the way he weighs things, which is slowly and with too many drafts, and then he did it, and there was a settled quiet afterward that he took for confirmation, because it felt like the quiet after a door shuts properly.

That was five months ago and the quiet has not lifted.

Not a hard silence. There is no sense of a face turned away, which he would almost prefer, because a face turned away is at least a face. It is more like standing in a room where somebody used to be and finding the air ordinary.

He has done all of it. He has read, and he has read the way he reads, which is properly, with the languages where he has them. He has fasted twice. He has gone back through the spring decision looking for the flaw, four times, and has found nothing except the ordinary imperfection of a human being doing a hard thing.

And now there are two explanations sitting on his desk, and he has been alternating between them since about July.

One: this is discipline, and there is something he has not seen, and God is waiting for him to find it.

Two: he was never as connected as he thought he was, and the last thirty years were mostly his own temperament, and what he is experiencing now is simply what it always was underneath.

He has told nobody either of those. He would find it very hard to say them out loud, because saying them would make them sound as serious as they are.

And you have your own silence. Something went quiet after you did what you were asked, and you have been assembling explanations for it in private.

He Obeyed And Then Heaven Went Quiet

The one verse that describes exactly this, and what it asks

There is a verse in Isaiah written for people in this precise condition, and it is remarkable because of who it says is standing in the dark.

Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God.Isaiah 50:10

Read the description of the person. Fears the Lord. Obeys the voice. Those are the two credentials, and they are both present, and the verse does not qualify them or cast doubt on them.

And that person is walking in darkness and has no light.

The verse does not treat this as a contradiction, and it does not diagnose it, and it does not tell him to go back through his decisions looking for the fault. It gives him one instruction, and the instruction is to lean.

You are the person in that verse, and the verse does not think there is anything wrong with you. It is written that the one who fears the Lord and obeys His voice may walk in darkness and have no light (Isaiah 50:10), and it is the Holy Spirit who preserved a sentence like that specifically so a careful man in his fifth month would not be able to conclude he had been dropped.

Now take the two explanations off the desk, one at a time.

The first: this is discipline and something is hidden. Look at what you have actually done with that theory. Four passes through the decision, properly, in the way you do things, and what you found was the ordinary imperfection of a human being doing a hard thing. That is not a hidden fault. That is a man.

And Scripture is not shy about discipline when it is happening. Hebrews describes it as something addressed to sons and explained to them, not as an unmarked silence a man has to decode.

You are not being disciplined by a God who has declined to say what for, because that is not how He is described to work with His own. Scripture says whom the Lord loves He disciplines, and He deals with us as with sons (Hebrews 12:6-7), and it is His Spirit who convicts specifically rather than leaving a person to search themselves in the dark for five months.

The second explanation is the crueler one: that thirty years were mostly temperament.

Consider what it asks you to believe. That a man of your particular caution, who does not claim things, who has spent his life refusing to overstate, was for three decades systematically overstating the one thing he refused to overstate about.

That is not a plausible account of you. It is a theory built entirely out of a bad five months, and it explains nothing that happened in the twenty-nine years before them.

You have thirty years of evidence that a silent season is not qualified to overturn, and the silence has no information about the decades. It is written that God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have shown toward His name (Hebrews 6:10), and it is the Holy Spirit who has been the constant across all thirty of those years, including the current five months in which He has said nothing.

And what the verse asks, which is the only instruction on offer.

Lean. Rely. Trust in the name.

Notice that it does not say wait for the light, or find out why it went dark, or fix it. It gives a man something to put his weight on while it stays dark, which is a different kind of help and it is the kind that actually works at four in the afternoon in a room that feels ordinary.

You have a name to lean on that does not go quiet when the sense of Him does. Scripture says the name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe (Proverbs 18:10), and it is His Spirit who makes a name a thing a person can genuinely put weight on rather than a phrase they can define.

The breakthrough

So take both explanations off the desk and leave them off.

You obeyed in the spring. That happened, and five months of quiet has produced no evidence against it, and four careful passes found nothing because there is nothing to find.

The silence is real. Nobody here is going to tell you it is not, or that you should feel something you do not feel, or that it will lift by autumn, because none of that is anybody's to promise.

You are a man who fears God and obeys His voice, and you are walking in darkness with no light, and Isaiah puts both of those in the same sentence about the same person. It is written, let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God (Isaiah 50:10), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes leaning an actual act in a quiet room rather than a poetic idea about one.

The lights are on. That was always the evidence. The sense of Him was how you knew, and it was a gift, and it was never the thing itself.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at the desk, in the ordinary quiet. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by hearing Him clearly. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the silence, then to the theory you have been alternating with since July, then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does about the quiet, His timing is His.

  1. Silence since the spring, you are darkness and you are not a dismissal. Isaiah puts a man who fears God and obeys His voice in exactly this dark, and you have no verdict to hand me.
  2. Theory that thirty years were only my own temperament, you are put down in the name of Jesus. It is written that God is not unjust to overlook the work and the love shown toward His name, and the Spirit was the constant across all thirty of them and is the constant in these five.
  3. Lord, the verse tells a man in the dark to lean on Your name and rely on You, and it never once tells him to go and find out why, so I am leaning. The lights are on, the noise was only how I knew, and the knowing is Yours to give back whenever You choose.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
