She had done it a hundred times in smaller rooms.
That is the detail she cannot get past. This was not a stretch. It was the same thing she had done in front of thirty people over and over, and this time there were about three hundred, and that should not matter and everybody says it does not matter and it mattered.
She got three lines in.
It was not nerves in the ordinary sense. Something happened in her throat that she has never been able to describe properly, a closing, and the sound came out thin and wrong on the third line and then on the fourth line it did not come out at all.
There was a moment. Then the room, which was a good room, came in and carried it, because three hundred people singing will carry anything, and she stood there with the microphone and could not, and after about half a verse she stepped back.
Somebody else took it. It was fine. It was genuinely fine.
Afterward, at least fifteen people were lovely to her. One woman she did not know held both her hands and said something about how brave she was, and she has thought about that woman's face more than any other part of it.
Five years.
She has not put her hand up since. Not once, for anything, and it is not only that room and it is not only singing. She has developed a general policy about visibility that she has never stated even to herself, and it operates below the level where a person argues with themselves.
She is enormously involved. She does an extraordinary amount. All of it is the kind of thing where nobody is looking at her.
And what sits underneath is not embarrassment, which she could have got over, and it is not the memory of the sound.
It is this: my body decided, in front of three hundred people, and I did not get a vote, and I cannot promise it will not decide again.
That is the true thing, and it is why five years of good reasoning has never moved it, because it is not a belief, it is a fear about something she genuinely does not control.
And you have a third line. Somewhere your body or your nerve made the decision instead of you, in front of people, and you have quietly stopped putting your hand up.

A bruised reed and a wick that is barely going
There is a description of Christ in Isaiah that is quoted about Him in the Gospels, and it is made of two images that are both about something almost finished.
A bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.Isaiah 42:3
A bruised reed is not a strong reed. It is a reed that has been damaged and would snap if anybody leaned on it, and the ordinary thing to do with it is to finish it off, because it is no longer any use as a reed.
A faintly burning wick is a wick that is smoking rather than burning, and the ordinary thing to do with it is to pinch it out, because it is producing more smoke than light.
He does neither. And it is not sentiment: the verse ends by saying He will faithfully bring forth justice, which means the reed and the wick are inside the description of how He gets things done, not an exception to it.
You are the reed in that verse and you are the wick, and He is not going to finish either one off. It is written that a bruised reed He will not break and a faintly burning wick He will not quench (Isaiah 42:3), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an ancient description of Christ's manner into something specific about a woman who stopped putting her hand up five years ago.
Now the true thing underneath, because it deserves to be met rather than argued with.
My body decided and I did not get a vote.
That is accurate. That is exactly what happened, and no amount of reasoning is going to make it untrue, and this page is not going to try. A throat closed. It was not a moral event and it was not a spiritual one, and it was not under your control at the time and it will not be next time either.
So the question is not how to guarantee it never happens again. There is no such guarantee available to anybody, including every person who has ever stood up in front of three hundred people without incident, which they all did on borrowed confidence they did not know was borrowed.
You are not being asked to become somebody whose body cannot fail, because that person does not exist and never did. Scripture says we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us (2 Corinthians 4:7), and it is the Holy Spirit who is the power in the jar, which has never once depended on the jar being guaranteed.
And the room, which carried it.
Three hundred people came in and sang. You have remembered that as the thing that covered your failure. It is not. It is what a room is for, and it is what those people were there to do, and the fact that they could pick it up in half a beat is the strongest argument against the policy you have been operating ever since.
You were carried by a room that was built to carry, and being carried is not the same as being replaced. It is written that we are members one of another (Romans 12:5), and it is His Spirit who makes a body do that, which is why three hundred strangers came in on the fourth line without anybody organizing it.
And the woman who held both your hands.
You have thought about her face more than any other part of it, and you have never let yourself ask why. It is because it was the only moment in the whole evening where somebody looked at you and did not see a problem, and you did not have anywhere to put that.
You were seen kindly by a stranger in the worst ten minutes of your life, and that was real and it counted. Scripture says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and it is the Holy Spirit who arranges strangers in halls, which is a thing He does constantly and gets no credit for.
So put your hand up for something small.
Not that room, and not that thing, and not to prove anything. Something small and visible where somebody will see you, and where it does not matter enormously if your voice does something strange.
Because what happened five years ago is that a throat closed on the third line and a room did what rooms do and a stranger held your hands.
That is a bruised reed. It is precisely and exactly the thing that verse was written about, and the verse has one instruction in it, which is what He does not do.
You are not broken and you are not being put out, and that promise was made about people in your specific condition. It is written that a bruised reed He will not break and a faintly burning wick He will not quench (Isaiah 42:3), and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a wick lit for five years in somebody who has been quietly staying out of every draft.
You cannot promise your body will not decide again. Nobody can. That was never the entry requirement, and you have been holding yourself to a standard no human being has ever met.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the hall, or at home, with your hand open. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by getting through it. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the third line, then to the true thing underneath about your own body, then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does the next time you are seen, the outcome is His to decide.
- Third line where my voice went, you are three lines and you are not my whole song. The Word says He does not break a bruised reed, and that promise was written about exactly the condition I was in that night.
- Policy about being visible that I never once said out loud, you are named and you are ended in the name of Jesus. It is written that we have this treasure in jars of clay so the surpassing power belongs to God, and the Spirit is the power in the jar and never asked for a guarantee about the jar.
- Lord, a stranger held both my hands and looked at me and did not see a problem, and I have thought about her face for five years without letting myself ask why. My hand is open, I am putting it up for something small, and my voice is Yours whatever it does.
