Somebody StayedLuke 24:29

They Were Warm And Then They Were Done

This message is for a man who was welcomed with real warmth into a community, integrated efficiently, and discovered about a year in that the welcome had been the whole of the relationship and there was nothing behind it

The welcome was genuinely excellent. He has said so to several people and he still means it.

Somebody found him on the first morning within about ninety seconds. He was introduced to eleven people by name. There was a coffee within the week, and a lunch within the month, and somebody remembered what he had said about his mother and asked about her the following Sunday, which is not a small thing and he noticed it.

He was in a group by week six. He had a role by month four. Everybody knew who he was and he was pleased.

It took him about a year to notice.

It was a Thursday and he was in a supermarket and it went through him almost casually: not one of the eleven has ever rung him for no reason.

He tested it, quietly, over the following months, the way you test a thing you do not really want to know. He waited to see who would initiate something that was not connected to an activity. Nobody did, over about seven months, and he is careful to add that he did not either, which he thinks is relevant.

The warmth was real. That is what makes it hard to describe to anybody. Nobody was fake and nobody was cold. The welcome was excellent and it was also, it turns out, complete: it was a process with a beginning and an end, and it ended when he was integrated, and integration is not the same as being anybody's friend.

He is now a man who is warmly greeted by about forty people every week and has nobody to ring.

And he cannot complain about it because there is nothing to complain about. Everybody has been lovely. That is the strangest and loneliest version of this there is.

And you have been welcomed like that. Efficiently, kindly, completely. And then the process finished and you found out that the warmth had been the doorway and not the house.

They Were Warm And Then They Were Done

They asked Him to stay, and He went in and sat down

There is a moment at the end of Luke where two men have been walking with somebody for hours, and they arrive, and He acts as though He is going further.

Everything up to that point had been a conversation on a road. Good, substantial, and mobile.

And then they say this.

But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent." So he went in to stay with them.Luke 24:29

He went in.

He does not send a message afterward. He does not add them to something. He goes into the house, and sits down at a table, and it is at that table, sitting down, that they finally recognize Him.

Recognition happens indoors. It does not happen on the road, in the good conversation, and the account is very precise about the point at which it does happen.

You are dealing with a Christ who goes in and sits down rather than accompanying you as far as the door. It is written that they urged Him strongly to stay and He went in to stay with them (Luke 24:29), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that going in something a man experiences rather than reads about.

Now the thing you added, which is worth taking seriously.

I did not initiate either, and I think that is relevant.

It is relevant, and it is honest of you to say it, and it is also not the whole picture. A new person in a community waits to be included because they have no standing to convene anything, and everybody who was already there had forty existing relationships and no gap in the week.

Nobody was withholding. There was simply nowhere for a forty-first person to be put, and warmth is easy and space is not.

You are not being kept out by anybody, you are experiencing what a full life looks like from outside it. Scripture says as you have opportunity, let us do good to everyone (Galatians 6:10), and it is the Holy Spirit who creates the opportunities, which is not something a man can manufacture by trying harder.

And the loneliest version, which you named precisely.

Warmly greeted by forty people and nobody to ring.

That is a real and specific condition and almost nobody has language for it, because from the outside it looks like belonging, and it is not, and any attempt to describe it sounds ungrateful.

You are describing something real and there is no ingratitude in it. It is written that God sets the solitary in families (Psalm 68:6), and the verse would be meaningless unless a person could be surrounded and still be solitary, and it is His Spirit who does the setting, in His own way and at His own pace.

And now what this page will not do.

It is not going to tell you to initiate, or to be the one who rings, or to invite somebody for coffee. You are a grown man who knows all of that, and handing it to you would turn a loneliness into a performance review.

You are being told who has come in and sat down, rather than being told to organize something. Scripture says behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him (Revelation 3:20), and eating with somebody is the indoor thing, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that presence real at an ordinary table.

And one thing about the Sunday when somebody asked about your mother.

You noticed it and you have remembered it, which tells you exactly what you are hungry for. Not more inclusion. Not another role. Somebody carrying a detail about you across a week without being prompted.

You are carried in detail by Somebody across every week, and none of it has ever needed prompting. It is written that even the hairs of your head are all numbered (Matthew 10:30), and it is His Spirit who makes that intimate rather than statistical, which is the whole difference between being counted and being known.

The breakthrough

So stand in the doorway and say the plain thing to Somebody who came in.

Because what happened over a year was that a community welcomed a man properly and then the welcome finished, which is what welcomes do, and there is nobody in that story who did anything wrong.

And you are now warmly greeted by forty people and have nobody to ring, and that is a real condition and you have named it accurately and without self pity, which most people never manage.

You have Somebody who did not go on further at the door but came in and sat down at your table. It is written that they urged Him strongly, saying stay with us, for it is toward evening, and He went in to stay with them (Luke 24:29), and it is the Holy Spirit who is how that staying is actually experienced, in a kitchen, on an ordinary evening, with nobody else in the house.

They recognized Him at the table. Not on the road. Indoors, sitting down, in the ordinary part of the evening.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the doorway, or at the table with the tea going. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by being included well. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the warmth, then to the thing you noticed in a supermarket on a Thursday, then turn and speak to Him. However He answers about the people around you, His timing is His.

  1. Warmth at that door, you are hospitality and you are not a friendship. The Word shows a Man who did not go on further at the door but went in and sat down at the table.
  2. Suspicion that this is my own fault, you are put down in the name of Jesus. It is written that God sets the solitary in families, which would mean nothing unless a person could be surrounded and still alone, and the Spirit does that setting Himself.
  3. Lord, somebody remembered a thing about my mother and asked me the following Sunday, and I have carried that for a year because it is what I am actually hungry for. You have carried every detail of me across every week without being prompted, and the table I am sitting at tonight is Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
